NEW DELHI: Dinner and a show make for a great evening, and during a one of its kind performance at the end of this month, guests can do both together. For the first time here, there will be a musical comedy, 'Dinner for Pricks', based on the lines of a supper theatre, where guests will not only be viewers, but also active participants.
The performance will take place on July 29 at The Park hotel, where they will construct their set, and then plans to hit other metropolitan cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru.
It's all centered around a pop-up French restaurant, Le Cigare Volant, which is an extension of the actual set. Through the evening, guests can enjoy wine, champagne, and a selection of hors d'oeuvres as they watch the action unfold in front of them. Seated with them at the restaurant will be some of the play's characters, and their waiter, too, will be the protagonist who weaves the story. "The play is a satirical musical comedy on the elite of Delhi. It will touch upon various topics like debauchery and pompousness that illustrate human excess in present-day Delhi," says Ashray Sachdeva, who co-founded the company Humour Me, which is organizing the event, with his brother Dhruv Sachdeva. He adds that the entire process has been in-house, and Dhruv has even written and directed the performance. Concept theatre, though relatively popular worldwide, is yet to establish a foothold in the country, so bringing together the production is no easy task. However, Ashray says it's the challenge that keeps them going. "We are still in the process of searching for the right look and ambience for the 200-seater restaurant, and it's a big project because we are building it completely from scratch. Since we will also have two projectors for live editing, it will also be a challenge to coordinate that with live entertainment," says Ashray.
He says there was no skepticism from the actors -- a diverse group of people associated with theatre for years, some even with Broadway experience -- who are quite happy to be part of a new concept. "Entertainment is growing in Delhi and people always want something new. Dinner for Pricks is all about creating a need," says Ashray, clarifying that the show, due to a mature theme, is only for those over the age of 21.
